What Is WAEC?
WAEC — the West African Examinations Council — is a regional examination body serving Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. The May/June WAEC is the most widely taken school-leaving examination in Nigeria. It is the benchmark that most employers and universities reference when they ask for your O-Level results.
What Is NECO?
NECO — the National Examinations Council — is a Nigerian-only examination that was established in 1999 as an alternative to WAEC. It holds its main examination in June/July, slightly after WAEC. NECO also runs a November/December sitting which is very popular as a resit examination.
Which Is Harder?
There is no definitive answer — the difficulty depends on the subject and the year. However, a few patterns are worth noting:
- WAEC Mathematics is widely considered more demanding than NECO Mathematics in most years
- NECO Biology and Chemistry questions tend to be more straightforward in their phrasing
- WAEC English comprehension passages are often longer and more complex than NECO's
- NECO marking is generally considered slightly more lenient than WAEC's
University and Employer Acceptance
Both WAEC and NECO are accepted by all Nigerian universities and JAMB. Federal and State universities accept combinations of both. Most Nigerian employers also accept either certificate without preference. However, for students applying to international universities — particularly in the UK, US, or Canada — WAEC is more widely recognised. Some foreign universities have never heard of NECO and may request a WAEC certificate specifically.
Cost Comparison
NECO registration fees have historically been slightly lower than WAEC fees. The difference is not enormous, but it can matter for families registering multiple children.
Timing and Scheduling
WAEC holds in May–June. NECO holds in June–July. This means you can write both in the same year if you choose — and many students do exactly that to maximise their chances of obtaining five credits.
Which Should You Take?
- Take WAEC if you plan to apply to international universities, or if your school only registers for one examination
- Take NECO as a backup if you are worried about failing subjects in WAEC, or as a resit option
- Take both if you can afford the fees and want the maximum chance of completing your five credits in one academic year
