Academic Warning Signs
- Declining grades — particularly a consistent downward trend over two or more terms
- Failing specific subjects repeatedly — one or two subjects consistently below passing
- Inability to complete homework independently — spending hours on assignments that should take 30 minutes
- Significant gap between class performance and teacher feedback — teacher reports suggest ability but results do not reflect it
- WAEC or NECO approaching with clear knowledge gaps — insufficient time to close gaps through school alone
Behavioural Warning Signs
- Avoiding or refusing to do homework — often a sign of feeling overwhelmed or lost rather than laziness
- Expressing hopelessness about school: "I'm just not smart," "I'll never understand this"
- Increased irritability around study time — frustration masking confusion
- Complaints of headaches or stomachaches around exam time — physical manifestations of academic anxiety
How to Bring Up Tutoring Sensitively
Many children and teenagers feel shame when tutoring is suggested — it can feel like a public declaration that they are "not smart." How you frame the conversation matters enormously:
- Do not frame it as a consequence of failure — "because your grades are bad" — which creates shame
- Frame it as an investment in their goals — "because we want to make sure you hit the score you need for Medicine / Engineering / etc."
- Mention role models and high achievers who had tutors — tutoring is standard practice for top students globally, not a mark of weakness
- Involve your child in the decision where possible — let them have input on timing, tutor selection, or format
What If Your Child Refuses?
Some children resist tutoring strongly — sometimes out of pride, sometimes because they are afraid a tutor will confirm their fears about their intelligence. In these cases, starting with a trial session framed as "just a meeting to talk about the subject" can reduce resistance. Once a student meets a good tutor who explains things in ways that finally make sense, resistance usually drops quickly.
